We run Certified Handler Certificate and Envirospray courses for farmers, growers, rural contractors, resellers, advisors and spray operators across New Zealand. You will cover safe handling, compliant storage, spray application and the record keeping WorkSafe NZ and the EPA expect, worked through with examples from the job you already do.
Certified Handler Certificate (CHC) Courses
Certified Handler Certificate training is for you if you use, store, dispose or sell agrichemicals classified as Acute Toxic Category 1 or Acute Toxic Category 2. Start with an initial course, or a renewal if your certificate has expired or is close to expiring.
Envirospray Courses
Envirospray covers safe application, equipment use, calibration, PPE, environmental care and spray records. Choose the certificate that matches the gear you operate.

Understanding the Certified Handler Pathway
A certified handler has shown they can manage certain hazardous substances safely. Under the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017, that certification is a legal requirement for hazardous substances classified as Acute Toxic Category 1 or Acute Toxic Category 2 Courses cover:
- Spotting hazards and putting controls in place.
- Storing and moving agrichemicals without spills or exposure.
- Responding to a spill or an exposure incident.
- Choosing, using and maintaining PPE.
- Your duties under the HSNO Act and its regulations.
Which Envirospray Certificate Do You Need?
Applicators of agrichemicals with properties of toxic, corrosive and ecotoxic risks to our environment must be qualified. Envirospray training qualifies you to be a ‘qualified person’. - Handpump Sprayer: knapsack, compression and other hand-held gear. Covers mixing, application technique, drift and disposal. Suits orchardists, viticulturists, landscapers and property owners.
- Motorised Boom and Handgun: tractor and ute mounted booms and high-pressure handguns. Adds calibration, coverage and handling of chemical.
- Qualified Contractor: for spraying commercially across multiple clients. Adds spray diaries, client records, business compliance and supervising other operators.
Practical Evidence
Some Certified Handler and Envirospray courses ask for practical evidence: proof that you apply safe handling, storage and spray practice in your own workplace.

Evidence shows you can handle agrichemicals safely at work: workplace observations, spray records, equipment checks or similar documentation. We tell you what evidence is required once you’ve enrolled.
Certified handler certificates are issued for five years. Book renewal training before yours expires so you stay compliant. Renewals bring you up to date on regulation and practice changes without repeating what you already know.

If you advise on, sell or otherwise influence the use of highly hazardous agrichemicals, you may still need certified handler status. Your certificate will show lifecycles as per your requirements.
